September 25/26

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend our Open House and Terry Fox Run. It was wonderful to see so many parents and families. With so much packed into the morning, things felt a little hectic, and I was disappointed that I did not have the opportunity to properly connect with everyone. I look forward to chatting with you at one of our upcoming Family Reading sessions or another time before or after school.

Despite the rainy weather, Division 13 did an excellent job during the Terry Fox Run. This fundraiser is an important Canadian tradition, and I am proud to share that Fairview raised over $2,000 in support of the Terry Fox Foundation.

Please check your child's backpack for any wet clothing and replace items with clean, dry clothes so they are available when needed.

Reminders

  • If you have not yet sent your child's markers, pencils, and crayons, please do so as soon as possible.
  • Please ensure that all consent forms have been completed through the Parent Portal.

As I am coaching volleyball this fall, there may be occasions on Mondays and Tuesdays when I am supervising a practice after school. If you are running late for pick-up, your child may be waiting in the office until you arrive.

September 18/26

🌟 Division 13 Weekly Update 🌟

Division 13 has had a busy and exciting first week! We have spent our time getting to know one another, learning classroom expectations, building routines, and getting organized for a wonderful year ahead.

Thank you to everyone who has already returned their purple Verification Form, Getting to Know You form, and $60 school supply fee. School supply fees can be paid either through the Parent Portal or by sending cash to school in a labeled zip-top bag.

Please also take a few minutes to complete the permission forms on the Parent Portal (walking permissions, outside media consent, yearbook permission, and others) as soon as possible.

📚 Family Reading

It was so lovely to meet many of you this morning during Family Reading! Thank you for taking the time to join us.

If you were unable to attend, please stop by the classroom at your convenience to sign up to contribute something for one of our classroom celebrations. I will send reminders as each event approaches, and once the schedule is finalized, it will be posted under the "Classroom Celebrations" section of our blog.

Volunteer and driver forms available for anyone interested in helping with classroom activities or field trips throughout the year:

  • Driver applications and driver's abstracts must be completed annually. (I sent a copy on Tuesday)
  • Obtain a current Criminal Record Check.
  • Volunteer applications only need to be completed every five years.

Your support is greatly appreciated!

✏️ Please and Thank You!

Today, your child brought home their markers and pencil crayons for labeling.

Please label each marker and pencil crayon with your child's class number, which can be found on the front of their supply bag. A black Sharpie works best.

Please remember to label:

  • Both the lid and the marker
  • Each individual pencil crayon

Your help with this is greatly appreciated! It makes it much easier for us to return supplies when they are found around the classroom.

There is no need to return the original boxes, as I have already prepared and labeled a pencil bag for each child.

Thank you for helping us keep our classroom organized!

🔤 Name Boggle

Each morning we enjoy a fun literacy activity called Name Boggle, where we try to find as many words as possible using the letters from our Special Helper's name.

This has quickly become a favourite activity, and the students are already becoming very skilled at it!

When it is your child's Special Helper day, they will bring their Name Boggle sheet home. If you would like to help them find even more words, we would love that! Take as much time as you need, but please return the sheet when completed, as students enjoy sharing their discoveries with classmates. We will also save these pages in their Memory Books.

I hope you enjoy this fun family activity. It is a great way to strengthen:

  • Reading skills
  • Writing skills
  • Rhyming skills
  • Vocabulary development
  • Creative thinking

It definitely gets your brain working!

🍕 Munch-a-Lunch

Munch-a-Lunch is now open for all hot lunch orders for the first term.

Upcoming hot lunch dates can also be found on the classroom calendar linked on our blog page.

✅ Reminders

  • Complete all permission forms on the Parent Portal.
  • Pay the $60 school supply fee through the Parent Portal or by sending cash in a labeled envelope or zip-top bag.
  • Return labeled markers and pencil crayons as soon as possible.

Below is my first letter home...

September 15, 2026

Dear Parents of Division 13 Students,

My name is Sheralyn Rowledge-Toscani and I have been a teacher at Fairview for many years, largely in the primary grades. I am really looking forward to a great year! I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome you and your children to my class and answer some questions you may have about this school year.  Div. 13 currently has 19 students.

Our school supplies have been done in BULK, the cost of these supplies are $60.00, this includes supplies and your child’s planner. $60.00 should be paid asap either online through the parent portal or in cash (please send in a ziplock labelled with your child’s name). I have already organized and labelled most of your child’s things, however on Friday I will send home their markers, super tips and pencil crayons.  I would appreciate if you could label each one with your child’s class number as indicated on the front of their bag using a black sharpie.  Please return these on Monday if possible.  If you need a permanent marker please email and I will send you one. Often, we find these on the floor, and this solves the mystery of whose it is!  Thank you so much in advance for your help with this!

*Students need a pair of sturdy running “indoor” shoes.  These will be used for gym and the classroom - this helps keep our school clean.

*Planners will provide home and school communication throughout the year, and where your child can record their home reading and you can write me messages (eg.) pickup or upcoming holidays).  We started our planners today, please look in the plastic pouch for notices. Please check and sign the planner nightly, as well as checking the pouch at the front.  Planners should be returned in this large ziplock bag daily, this helps protects the books and planner from spills.

*An extra set of clothes (including socks and underwear) is suggested in case of any type of accidents. (bathroom/puddles!).  Ideally if you could label your child’s belongings – our lost and found is always overflowing!

*Fairview has a pack in/pack out lunch, these can be in either a paper bag or clean container. These will stay in their backpacks except during eating times.  I recommend that you send healthy snacks and lunches, no candy and pop please. There is no sharing of any food.  Please send a labelled water bottle for your child as that is so much safer than the water fountains. Water refill stations are open.

*Please update the verification form with any allergy information.  If your child has a serious allergy, please request the medical information documents from the office.

*Div. 13 will be spending lots of time outside.  Rain or shine we will go out for learning, and physical activity.  Students will also be out for recess and lunch; this is the West Coast!  Please ensure your child has appropriate clothing and footwear for all kinds of weather.  Fairview is so lucky to have our forest but as you know it gets wet and mucky!  Rain boots are recommended because as you know children love puddles and mud!

* We will often have our classroom door and windows open to improve the ventilation, please send a hoodie or a sweater so if your child is cold, they have something warm.

*I have attached a white questionnaire to this letter that I would like you to fill out and return as soon as possible.  These give me valuable information and insights about your child that sometimes would take me months to discover.  Thanks J

*If you’d like to volunteer for the class, please complete/return the form pink). Thank you in advance.

Division 13’s Schedule:

*Library will be on Thursday, your child’s library book will come home in a labelled ziplock bag and should be returned weekly.

*Family Reading will be on Fridays 8:30-8:45.

*Phys. Ed (Gym) days are Monday & Wednesday but as most of you know exercise and movement breaks are important every day, please ensure that your child is dressed in comfortable clothes so that they are able to fully participate in all activities.

*Fine Arts (music/drama) with Mr. Saul is on Fridays.

*Forest/Outdoor Education will be most Tuesdays.

*Division 13 has their own website/blog – the link is

https://srtfairview26-27.blogspot.com

This can also be accessed by going to Fairview Elementary, then Classroom Websites and then Ms Rowledge-Toscani. This is the main method of communication in our class.  There is a monthly calendar plus I generally update it weekly (usually Friday but for sure by Sunday!). I will try to send an email each week as a reminder. Please check regularly so you know what we have been up to and what is coming up.

I like to include photos of the students in action but to do this, parents must agree to outside media.  This is with several other forms that you will need to complete asap on the parent portal.

I am excited to spend this school year with your children and I am also looking forward to working with you, the parents – partners in your child’s education.

I will do my best to keep you informed on what is going on in the classroom.  If you have any questions please do ask, either write a note in the planner, or call the school at 604-465-9331.  You can also reach me by email at  sheralyn_rowledge-toscani@sd42.ca but please note I don’t have a chance during the day to check it but will get back to you asap and if it is something urgent it is best to call the school.

I can’t wait to meet and get to know all of you!

Sheralyn Rowledge-Toscani

***Due to the fact there are often email issues, I am sending a hard copy of this letter home with the students. If you didn’t receive it by email as well, please let me know as soon as possible so we can rectify this problem.  Thanks
